Youth, Msowoya want APM’s presence on crisis
Politician Dan Msowoya and youth organisations in Mzuzu have asked President Peter Mutharika to show his presence and provide solutions to problems affecting the country if people are to stop protests.
Government is threatening to withhold December salaries for staff at the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) who are demanding a 70 percent salary increment and has also been calling on Malawians to bear with it on the governance and economic issues.
Currently, the Judiciary support staff are in week seven of their strike which has paralysed the country’s justice delivery system. Besides, some public institutions of higher learning such as College of Medicine, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (Unima), have also prematurely closed due to a stand-off with authorities on several issues.
Speaking during the news conference organised by Youth and Society (YAS), Centre for Youth and Development CYD), Child Development Support Organisation (Chideso) and Mzuzu Youth Association (MYA) on Thursday, Msowoya said currently the country’s leadership is not showing sense of direction.
He urged Mutharika to address Malawians on measures he has put in place to deal with economic and governance problems affecting the country.
He said threatening people to stop protesting is not a solution.
YAS executive director Charles Kajoloweka said government’s failure to resolve the Judiciary and ACB strikes has serious consequences.
He said apart from Malawians being denied access to justice, closure of the two institutions sends a bad signal to donors on the willingness of government to handle Cashgate cases.
